The Liechtenstein Football Association was established in 1934. In 1974, it joined FIFA as the 142th member football association; in the same year, it joined the UEFA as the 34th member football association. There are now seven club teams, one of which is professional and the other six are amateur.
The first A-class international competition of the Liechtenstein National Men's Team was lost to the Swiss team 0 to 1 at home in Balzes on March 9, 1982. The Liechtenstein team participated in the first official A-class international competition in 1994. They lost to the Northern Ireland team 1-4
